Strange explanation from Señor Cañavate. Connex in Latin means connection or bond. It describes quite clearly the main purpose of the former Konnex association, merging of Batibus, EHS and EIB. I do not think the name was chosen by chance Just a small correction in Latin connection is spelled as "connexio" or plural "connexionis". Now if from that we can say it was the connection of the three previous associations that brougth up the Konnex name or if it was the ideia of a protocol that can connect everything it is everyone's guess. Only the KNX association founders can clarify it.

I also did not know the answer for that and to satisfy my curiosity I emailed KNX Association's Marketing Manager Mr. Casto Cañavate Fernández. Here's his answer: From: "Casto Canavate" To: EB (...) Date: 21-07-2010 07:29 Subject: RE: What's the meaning of KNX Dear Mr Borges, Indeed, as you mentioned EIB meant European installation Bus, which was a former association with special success in German speaking countries (even though, the association was settle in Belgium). In 1997, the 3 major association in Europe decided to merge into one common Association. I mean: Batibus : association especially successful in France EHSA (European Home Systems Association): association resulting from a European project for automatic configuration of bus compatible white (washing machine, …) and brown (video, …) goods EIBA, the one you know. The common goal of these ones was the creation of a joint standard for a new bus system “KNX”. As result, KONNEX Association came up. This was an in-between solution ended up with KNX Association, when the process was completed. Unfortunately, Neither Konnex nor KNX means anything. It was the chosen name for them but there is no meaning behind them. I hope this reply suffice your curiosity! Best regards, Casto Cañavate KNX Association |
