I have heard that KNX is in many cases to slow to use for HVAC control but better for lighting control. Is the low bandwidth a problem in projects?

From my experience bus load is not an issue if you design the system properly in advance. In case you encounter problems with the relatively low bandwidth you can use KNXnet/IP routing (So you can use standard ethernet speed as backbone between different KNX lines).

Further info can be found in chapter "Routing in hierarchical architectures" in a PDF from Weinzierl.

Could you explain us which functions are the time critical in your HVAC application in order to help you better...

I have not a certain time-critical function. I only try to penetrate the area of building automation and bandwidth was an issue I was told as central by some and non central by others.
